Anthropic's September 16, 2026 announcement folded Claude Cowork into one Claude and gave the assistant a place to put finished work. Claude Docs and Claude Slides build documents and presentations inside the conversation you're already having.
Chatbots have written text for years — the draft just usually landed in a document editor somewhere else. The interesting question is not whether Claude can draft a report (it can; our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison covers that). It's what changes when the draft, the revision, and the finished file stay in one place.
The official announcement frames this as a merge, not a new product launch. Cowork, Anthropic's place for longer, agentic work, and the standard chat interface are becoming one Claude: users were frustrated deciding which tool a task belonged in, and work started in one area did not carry into the other.
Alongside the merge came Claude Docs, Claude Slides, and Claude Design inside ordinary conversations. Ask for a document and you and Claude write it together; ask for a presentation and Claude drafts the slides. You can edit either directly, present straight from Claude, or download as PowerPoint or PDF.
Three details matter more than they first appear:
The Verge read the launch as Anthropic answering Google's Gemini-in-Workspace push. Rivals already tie AI to their office suites, and this is Anthropic's version of that bet.
Claude Docs is a document editor inside Claude. You don't open a new app or pick a template first — you ask for what you need, and a document appears that both you and Claude can edit.
Anthropic's Help Center guide is explicit about the flow: ask for a doc in any conversation, Claude asks a few clarifying questions first, then drafts it on screen. You can also start with /docs, pick "Output" then "Docs", or use a template from the Artifacts tab.
The document is a rich-text file saved to your Claude account, with headings, tables, and other formatting supported, and a doc can hold several tabs "like sections of a notebook." Every doc is saved to the Artifacts tab, so you can find it again from any conversation.
The practical difference shows up in revision. Nothing is locked while Claude works: edit alongside it, change a line yourself, or ask for a scoped change such as "tighten the intro and add a risks section." Claude makes the edit and tells you what changed.
Docs start private. On Team and Enterprise plans you invite people or groups with view or edit access, or share with the whole organization — but docs can't leave it yet. Pro and Max allow sharing with anyone who has the link; opening a shared doc requires a Claude account. Viewers read; editors read, edit, comment, and export. There's no comment-only access level, only the owner can rename or delete, and deletion is permanent — no trash, and the doc disappears for everyone it was shared with.
Anyone with edit access can work on the same doc in real time, alongside Claude. Comments work like a document editor you already know, and @Claude in a comment makes the change and explains why. Claude acts with the permissions of whoever asked, so it never edits for someone with view access only.
Exports are Word (.docx), PDF, Markdown, and Google Docs; you can also ask Claude to turn a doc into a presentation with Claude Slides.
Current limits:
Claude Slides does the same for presentations. You ask for a deck, and Claude drafts slides instead of sending you to a separate design tool.
Anthropic's headline example is a weekly report that becomes a five-slide summary for a leadership meeting, both produced in the same conversation, so the slides already match the report. Anyone who has rebuilt a deck by hand from a finished document knows how much work that removes. It's a different proposition from dedicated AI presentation generators such as Gamma and Beautiful.ai, which usually start from a prompt rather than a conversation you've already had.
Claude Design now runs inside conversations, so visual work that used to require a separate tool is available from the same chat — and standalone use keeps working as before.
You can edit slides directly, select an element and move it, or tell Claude what to change — and present straight from Claude. Anything you make with Design, Slides, or Docs lives at one shareable link you can open on your phone. You also control how often Claude checks in: by default it asks before acting, or you can let it keep working and check in only when something needs a closer look.
Slides has a shorter paper trail than Docs. The artifacts guide confirms the basics — build from notes, reports, or the conversation; edit slides directly; present without leaving Claude; export to PowerPoint or PDF. There's still no dedicated "Get started with Claude Slides" article, so details like comments, per-slide permissions, or mobile editing aren't separately documented (mobile follows Docs: create and view, with editing and sharing settings on web or desktop). Treat a deck as editable in Claude, presentable there, and exportable to PowerPoint or PDF, and verify anything beyond that.
The real change is that document and presentation work now runs along the same thread as the thinking that produced it: conversation, draft, revise, collaborate, review, export — without re-explaining context to a new tool at each stage.
That has three practical effects: less context switching — sources stay in view while Claude drafts around them; cheaper iteration — a change request targets one section or slide instead of regenerating everything; and downstream work that inherits the upstream conversation — a deck asked for in the report's thread starts with the numbers the report settled.
Claude can also run the loop on a schedule. Anthropic's help article documents recurring tasks — a weekly report set to run every Monday starts without being asked — and finished files: documents, spreadsheets with working formulas, or presentations you can open in PowerPoint, all downloadable from the same conversation.
None of this removes the work a human still owns. Drafts need fact-checking against their sources, editing for judgment and tone, and approval before they represent you or your organization. The tool moves the first structured draft into the conversation; it does not remove review.
This comparison describes documented differences only. It is not a ranking, and none of these tools is a drop-in replacement for another.

The honest summary: Claude's advantage is where work starts, not the maturity of the editor it ends in. Their main proposition: you never leave the conversation to begin.
Docs start private, and sharing is capped by plan. On Pro and Max, a doc can be opened by anyone with the link — a default worth understanding before you put sensitive material in a shared doc.
Enterprise customers have extra conditions. Docs is off by default until an owner turns it on in Organization settings > Artifacts, and it isn't available for organizations using customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK), zero data retention (ZDR), or a HIPAA-ready configuration. The Compliance API records events for the doc itself, but not edits and comments inside it. Removing someone from the organization removes their doc access at the same time.
Practical precautions (advice, not Anthropic-certified controls): review who has edit access before sharing, verify content before distributing it, keep unnecessary sensitive information out of drafts, and remember beta behavior can change between releases.

Can Claude Docs export to Word and Google Docs?
Yes. The Help Center lists Word (.docx), PDF, Markdown, and Google Docs as export formats for Claude Docs. You can also ask Claude to turn a doc into a presentation with Claude Slides.
Can Claude Slides export to PowerPoint and PDF?
Yes. Anthropic states presentations download as PowerPoint or PDF. Whether a PowerPoint export preserves every element exactly as edited in Claude is not documented, so test an export on a throwaway deck before relying on it.
What are the current limitations of Claude Docs and Claude Slides?
Claude Docs has no version history yet, no comment-only access level, and no external sharing on Team and Enterprise plans. Deleting a doc is permanent with no trash. Docs count toward plan usage limits and are not available for organizations using CMEK, ZDR, or a HIPAA-ready configuration. Activity inside a doc, like edits and comments, is not yet recorded in the Compliance API.
